What is Apologetics?
Christians can no longer afford to be in "intellectual neutral"...
I have long held to the belief that “Academic Freedom” and integrity within education has long been in trouble. Though I am only 39 years of age I have seen through past academic studies in philosophy (cum laude) and MA in Ancient history (both at secular universities) how far the current modes of education have fallen. During my first 4 years of college I simply “drank the kool-aid” just like everyone else, but when I went back to test the waters again in the realm of philosophy (at a much more seasoned age of late 20s) I did not drink the kool-aid and challenged anything that I thought was illogical or without basis. What does this include? Mostly in regards to the God hypothesis (and no this is NOT a simple attempt to get “God into the classroom”). What I mean is that time and time again I was told that certain areas of academic inquiry were simply “off-limits,” for example that of God and moreover the Christian notion of God. However when I challenged many of my PhD professors they simply could not defend “why” this was off-limits nor why this was not stifling intellectual discourse since it at least seemed to be the inference to the best explanation in many instances. Moreover “if” they were right in excluding the Bible and the concept of Christian theism from fruitful discourse, then what was this reason? Time and time again (once I was more seasoned and not a teenager) I found that other than threats these professors could not defend why naturalism (or non-theism) was the mode in which we must learn. I even asked (always politely) if the professors would be willing to debate me in public forum which they quickly said “NO.” I had one professor continue to threaten me in regards to pushing the case for Christian theism that my grade might be affected. So when in the world did academia take a back-seat to relativism and political correctness??? (Please keep in mind that it is obvious that homeschooling MUST be taken serious as I have seen some people "play" with it b/c they are simply lazy and this is NOT good education if the parents are not going to take it serious... This is common sense and not the point of this site; the point of this site is to help you integrate Apologetics into your homeschooling and private studies (not to teach you "how-to" do homeschool)).
What I have seen and what I have based my masters in history on (concerning the philosophy of history itself) is that society and education as a whole has completely lost its ability to “think and reason” logically. What we seen instead is a simple: “My professors said it so it must be true.”Without the least bit of analysis or contemplating that “maybe” what they are being spoon-fed is wrong? One does not have to look far to see why a private Christian school or homeschooling trumps public education across the board in the same standardized testing:
So this should beg the question “why/how” can a good money-laden public education be so far behind a simple Bible-based education on the same testing “if” the Bible and theism as a whole is so wrong? The simple answer that I have came to is that because it is not wrong. No matter how much money is put into a system that states 2+2=5 it really cannot reconcile the inconsistencies with this logic. So the question is “what can we do?”
Though I do not think it is going to be a super-easy fix, I do think it is something we are going to have to do. Like I said, having been brought up in nothing but secular schooling I have not drawn these conclusions from myself being brought up either via home-school or having a private Christian education. I also do know that the small size public school system I attended as well as all of the ones my friends attended and graduated in the late 90s now has to have full-time police just to keep the kids from killing themselves or others. Is this due to “gun laws” run rampant? Not really b/c in 1996 my public school allowed students to bring guns onto campus as long as they were left in the automobile and you guessed it, there were zero school shootings. This tells me that it is more of a “moral” problem than a “law” problem. And again – a biblical viewpoint does make sense of origins, morals, purpose, destiny and a historic account of humanity that a non-theistic viewpoint (especially naturalistic one) simply cannot.
Again – though I do not have all the answers of course, I do believe that the Christian philosopher Francis Schaeffer was correct in assessing our cultural breakdown with that of an abandonment of Christian (biblical) theism. While I am not talking about theocracy per se, I am talking about an answer of value and worth and not a stifling of educational inquiry that today’s “corporate/governmental” education system does not provide.
I have spoken before (and will continue to) concerning the idea of a community having a type of “Christian Center” – whether this is a small almost monastic-like library to a more modern-day youth center with similar educational promotion explaining why the biblical vantage point makes sense is of the utmost importance for the future of society as a whole that continues to fall-apart at an ever increasingly alarming rate; I no longer feel this is in and of itself enough. While this should of course be approach first and foremost through prayer, I do believe a type of “PLAN – B” should be in place for every household so that when the “final straw” is crossed, there may be an alternative. What would “Plan B” be or consist of? I believe it will look similar to a modern-form of Anabaptism (the groups such as Amish/Mennonite/Brethren). NO this does not mean we have to ride buggies or dress in a certain way; my point is that the cares of the world are not theirs and they are focused on Christ and biblical like living standards. Media, gas prices, stock market, education, etc are of no concern to these groups. Education is handled and taught by them within a group and they seek to live-out a life focused on Christ. Are they perfect? Of course not and I am not Mennonite, Amish or anything of the such, but their model does make sense both biblically as well as in lieu of today’s cultural crossroads. (Keep in mind that I lived for over 2 years in New York City and I work at the Fortune 500 #1 company and I am not Amish/Mennonite when I say this; but I also know that society is changing rapidly and we have a biblical mandate to do better (especially for our children)).
Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?' And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’ (Matthew 7:22-3)
“Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the people of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me. 18 When I say to a wicked person, ‘You will surely die,’ and you do not warn them or speak out to dissuade them from their evil ways in order to save their life, that wicked person will die for their sin, and I will hold you accountable for their blood. 19 But if you do warn the wicked person and they do not turn from their wickedness or from their evil ways, they will die for their sin; but you will have saved yourself. 20 “Again, when a righteous person turns from their righteousness and does evil, and I put a stumbling block before them, they will die. Since you did not warn them, they will die for their sin. The righteous things that person did will not be remembered, and I will hold you accountable for their blood. 21 But if you do warn the righteous person not to sin and they do not sin, they will surely live because they took warning, and you will have saved yourself.”
